How to Find a Job in France as a Foreigner in 2026

To find a job in France, EU citizens can apply and start like any French candidate. Britons, Americans and most other non-EU nationals need either a "Talent" residence card, which requires a qualifying salary, or an employer who files a work authorisation before they arrive. Search on France Travail, LinkedIn and Welcome to the Jungle, send a one-page French CV and expect at least the SMIC, €1,867.02 gross a month1.

Hiring in France has cooled, but it has not stopped. Employers still planned more than 2 million recruitments for 20262, and shortages persist in health, hospitality, building trades and IT. Many English-language guides that rank for this query are years old and still mention Pôle emploi, now France Travail. This one starts with the question that decides everything for a non-EU reader: which permit fits your passport.

Rules checked on 10 October 2026

Visa rules, salary thresholds and procedures change often. This guide was checked on 10 October 2026 against the official sources listed at the bottom of the page. Before you act, confirm each point on France-Visas and Service-Public.fr, on Your Europe if you are an EU citizen, or with the consulate that covers your country.

What does the French job market look like in 2026?

Unemployment rose to 8.3% in the second quarter of 2026, its highest level since 2020, yet employers still struggle to fill 43.8% of their planned hires32. The figures come from INSEE3 and France Travail's annual hiring survey2. Youth unemployment (15 to 24) reached 21.6%, and the employment rate stood at 69.0%3.

Where are the jobs?

Île-de-France, the Paris region, leads with 388,806 planned recruitments, ahead of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (Lyon) with 255,4072. Paris itself had 6.6% unemployment, while Brittany and Pays de la Loire had the lowest regional rates at 6.8%4. Hauts-de-France, in the North, was at 10.0%4.

Which jobs are in demand?

The biggest hiring volumes in 2026 are kitchen assistants (97,100 projects), café and restaurant servers (93,800) and seasonal farm work2. Home-care aides (69,500) and nursing assistants (62,100) are among the steadiest needs2.

France also publishes an official shortage list, the liste des métiers en tension, set region by region by an order of 21 May 20255. In Île-de-France it includes nurses, nursing assistants, IT engineers and IT project managers, construction engineers, roofers and cooks5. For a listed job in a listed region, the employer's work authorisation cannot be refused on labour-market grounds.

Can you work in France with your passport?

EU, EEA and Swiss citizens need no permit. Everyone else needs a visa that allows work, and the right route depends on your salary, your diploma and your nationality.

Your passport Can you work on arrival? Most realistic routes
EU, EEA, Swiss Yes No residence card needed6
UK No Talent card, employer-sponsored "salarié" card; no working holiday7
US No Talent card, employer-sponsored card; no working holiday7
Canada, Australia, New Zealand Yes, on a working holiday visa Working holiday (one of 15 agreements)7, then Talent or salarié
India No, unless selected Young Professionals Scheme8, Talent card, employer-sponsored card

EU citizens

You can live and work in France without a residence card; one is available but optional6. After 5 years of legal residence you acquire permanent residence6. You still need a social security number (NIR), which you or your employer can request9, and you can register with France Travail like a French jobseeker.

Which French work permit fits a non-EU applicant?

  • Talent, qualified employee. For a job paying at least €39,582 gross a year with a master's-level diploma obtained in France10. The employer needs no work authorisation, and the card lasts as long as the contract, up to 4 years10.
  • Talent, EU Blue Card. For a job paying at least €59,373 gross a year, with a degree of at least three years of higher education or 5 years of relevant experience10.
  • Salarié or travailleur temporaire card. The standard route. Your employer files a work authorisation online before you travel, then you apply for a long-stay visa at the consulate. A permanent contract (CDI) leads to the "salarié" card, a fixed-term one (CDD) to "travailleur temporaire".
  • Job-search card for French graduates. If you earned a master's or equivalent in France, you get 1 year, not renewable, to find work11. Former students can apply within 4 years of their French diploma, and a related job paying over €2,800.53 gross a month needs no work authorisation11.
  • Working holiday (PVT). France has 15 agreements, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea7. The US, the UK and India are not covered.
  • India's Young Professionals Scheme. Open to Indians aged 18 to 35, with a planned quota of 500 a year and a 12-month visa extendable up to 24 months8.

Watch out

New rules apply since 1 January 202612. Before a first multi-year card you must pass a civic exam, scoring at least 32 out of 4012, and show French at A2 level, B1 for a 10-year resident card13. Plan your French lessons from the start.

Fees went up on 1 May 202614. A long-stay visa (VLS-TS) now costs €300 and a first residence card €35014.

Which job sites do French recruiters use?

France Travail has the largest pool of offers, APEC and Cadremploi target managers, and LinkedIn and Welcome to the Jungle carry most international and startup roles.

Temp agencies such as Adecco, Randstad and Manpower are the usual entry point for warehouse, industry, construction and hospitality jobs. Skip Monster.fr, which is no longer an active French job board.

Can you get a job in France speaking only English?

Yes, but mostly in tech, startups, international companies, research, tourism and English teaching. Paris has the largest pool of English-speaking roles. Elsewhere, and in most companies, daily work and interviews happen in French. Even for an English-speaking job, basic French makes a difference with colleagues, and non-EU residents will need A2 for a multi-year card anyway13.

Pro tip

Search LinkedIn and Welcome to the Jungle with the keywords "anglais courant" or "English speaking". French companies often write the ad in French even when the working language is English.

How do you write a French CV and cover letter?

One page for early careers, two at most for experienced profiles, no obligation to add a photo, age or nationality, and keywords that mirror the ad. French law bans excluding candidates on grounds such as origin, age, family situation or physical appearance, so none of these belong on your CV by obligation15. The photo is optional and becoming less common.

  • Title your CV with the job you target, not "Curriculum Vitae".
  • Write it in French for a French ad, and state your French level honestly (for example "Français B1").
  • Use the ad's exact terms, because many employers screen with an ATS. Our ATS CV guide covers this.
  • Add a short cover letter (lettre de motivation). French recruiters still read them, especially in SMEs. Use our cover letter guide.

Interviews often open with "Présentez-vous". Prepare it with our guide to introducing yourself, and if your first rounds are remote, read the video interview tips. You can also check your CV against the ad with the Epimoni resume analysis.

What will you earn in France?

The SMIC is €1,867.02 gross a month since 1 June 2026, about €1,478 net, and the median private-sector salary is €2,190 net a month. The minimum wage is €12.31 gross an hour for a 35-hour week1. The latest INSEE data put the average private-sector salary at €2,733 net a month16.

Salaries are quoted gross, usually per year. Employee social contributions come off the gross figure, so use the official URSSAF simulator to see your net pay. Paris rents are much higher than in Lyon or Toulouse, and some cities, Paris included, cap rents.

Your employer must offer company health insurance (mutuelle) and pay at least 50% of it17. If you are recruited from abroad, the impatriate tax regime can exempt an impatriation bonus until the end of the 8th year after you start18. If your contract sets no bonus, you can opt for a flat 30% of your net pay21. Benchmark any offer with our salary estimation tool and prepare with how to negotiate your first salary.

CDI, CDD and the trial period

A CDI is an open-ended contract, a CDD a fixed-term one. In 2026, 41% of planned hires were CDI2. Every CDI starts with a trial period (période d'essai) of up to 2 months for employees, 3 for technicians and supervisors and 4 for managers (cadres), renewable once only if the sector agreement and your contract allow it19.

Your first 30 days in France

  1. Before you leave (non-EU): your employer obtains the work authorisation, unless you are on a Talent, PVT or Young Professionals route; then apply for your visa on France-Visas.
  2. Within 3 months of arrival (non-EU): validate your VLS-TS online on the ANEF portal20.
  3. If required: attend your OFII appointment and sign the integration contract13.
  4. Get a proof of address, needed for every later step.
  5. Open a bank account and get a RIB for your salary.
  6. Request your social security number through your employer or your CPAM9.
  7. Join the company mutuelle17.
  8. Create your space on impots.gouv.fr so you get a personal withholding rate.
  9. No job yet? Register with France Travail, and APEC if you are a manager.
  10. Check your contract: CDI or CDD, trial period, collective agreement, and pay of at least the SMIC1.
